Its easy to forget the basics so check yourself with these two tips from Glendale, CA teacher Ben M As singers, were very sensitive about the way our voices feel. Even the slightest change in the strength, tone, or comfort of the voice is detected by a singer and can lead to an array of concerns about vocal health. But so often when students report problems with their voice, such as vocal fatigue, hoarseness, difficulty singing, and a rough, gritty feeling, they haven’t given much thought to the two single most important factors to maintaining a healthy voice: sleep and hydration. 1. Have you REALLY had enough water today? Let’s be honest â€" the answer is probably no. But understanding why hydration is so important to maintaining good vocal health may encourage you to drink that extra glass of water. Have you ever seen a video of vocal cords at work? If not, go to YouTube and do a search for a “laryngoscope.” One of the first things you’ll probably notice about the vocal cords is that they are slippery and wet â€" they have to be, in order to vibrate freely and create a smooth, healthy sound. How do you think the sound and feel of your voice would change if your vocal cords weren’t quite as hydrated? Well, think about your skin when it becomes dried out. Instead of appearing supple, smooth and glowy, it becomes tight, uneven, and dull. The same is true of your voice. Hydration works from the inside out â€" replenishing your entire body so that your tissue is healthy and flexible. Remember â€" hydrating the voice is not like applying a topical medication! You can’t just take a big swig of water before a long performance and expect your cords to stay hydrated. The only way to hydrate vocal cords is to hydrate your entire body â€" and that means drinking a lot of water each day. Individual needs vary, but it is recommended that women consume 2.2 liters of water a day, while men need 3 liters. 2. Did you get enough sleep? Think of it this way â€"  your voice is a muscle, just like any other in your body. Each time you lift weights, do yoga, or go for a run, do you notice that additional tone right away? Probably not, unless you imagined it, because your body first has to go through a reparative process in which it rebuilds the muscle tissue you broke down during the workout. The same process â€" albeit on a much more delicate level â€" happens to your voice each time you use it. And without that extended period of rest after a vocal workout, your voice doesn’t have time to repair itself and reap all the benefits of your training. This is where the sleep comes in. According to findings from Harvard Medical School, “many of the major restorative functions in the body like muscle growth, tissue repair, protein synthesis, and growth hormone release occur mostly, or in some cases only, during sleep.” So, if you’re looking to gain any sort of endurance (for those long live sets or strenuous studio sessions), the first step is giving your body plenty of time to recoup. The National Sleep Foundation concedes that there is no “magic number” for sleep. Sleep and hydration needs are as individual as vocal needs â€" they vary from person to person, and it’s up to each singer to determine what is working the best for him or her. Once you have implemented these two important staples into your daily routine, you can begin improving your voice with a teacher who can identify areas of improvement for you. Vocal exercises, posture, breath support, proper technique â€" these are all important to learn and implement. Both AP and IB courses offer students a challenging academic experience and the opportunity to earn college credit. Students can choose between AP and IB classes by understanding the goals of each program, researching program availability, and examining the time commitment of each. If youre looking to challenge yourself academically this fall, keep reading to discover how to decide between AP and IB classes. AP vs. IB classes: understand the goals of each program Both AP and IB courses set out to give students an advantage when applying to colleges. That being said, its important to know the specific goals of each program, in an effort to choose the right one for you. The main goal of an AP course is to educate students about very specific content in subjects ranging from biology to U.S. history. Students interested in AP classes should note the following: AP students are tested on what they have learned via a multi-hour exam at the end of the course. The exam includes several question formats, but is primarily multiple-choice. The score students earn, on a scale of one to five, dictates whether or not they receive college credit. Like an AP class, IB courses discuss specific subjects. The International Baccalaureate Organization presents a curriculum that primarily incorporates exams, papers, and projects. Students interested in an IB class should note the following: Tests may be scored by external assessors, who assign a score between one and seven. While IB courses require exams, the focus is on question formats that are not multiple-choice. However, there are many American high schools that offer IB courses as well. Students who dont have access to AP courses in school can also take them online, which makes them much more readily available. If your schedule is packed with extracurricular activities or personal obligations, it may be wise to take fewer advanced courses so you can devote the appropriate time to each. AP vs. IB classes: note the cost of each program Enrolling in an IB diploma program is more expensive than taking an AP course or courses. Theres a $172 registration fee to enroll in an IB program, plus a $119 fee per exam, according to International Baccalaureate. AP classes, on the other hand, are free to enroll in and only cost $94 per exam, according to the College Board. Students are only required to take the exam if they want potential college credit. The cost of the two programs can be a large factor when deciding between AP and IB classes. It can be helpful to talk to your parents to see which option is the best fit for you and your family. Our perfect candidate will be able to work as an integral part of a small team and communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical staff. Candidates must also have a good working knowledge of systems administration (Ubuntu / AWS experience desirable), sensible database design (e.g. load optimisation / vs. normalisation) and general software architecture - because you'll be helping to design products as well as implement / maintain them! Our current systems are totally bespoke (no off-the-shelf frameworks) and we're likely looking to stay that way, so a good knowledge of OOP (specifically MVC) coding is required. Solid HTML, CSS, JS are also desirable and an appreciation of graphic design / usability would be great too.
